DMEA Newcomer Award 2021: This year’s winners

On 27 May, as part of the virtual Newcomer Programme at this year’s DMEA, the best final papers written by students on health IT received a DMEA Newcomer Award.

Whether the topic is streamlining processes or intensifying disease research and improving treatment, the potential for digital solutions in healthcare is huge and has yet to be fully exploited. These subjects are an ideal environment for up-and-coming scientists aiming to help shape tomorrow’s healthcare system with their ideas. On 27 May at DMEA, seven students were presented with the DMEA Newcomer Award for outstanding final papers.

Six clever ideas for a digital healthcare system

This year, Yauheniya Zhdanovich from Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt/Main impressed the jury with her contribution in the ‘Master’s degree’ category. Her paper on predicting prostate diseases with the help of machine learning received first prize. In the ’Bachelor’s degree’ category first prize went to Luisa Bode from Hochschule Hannover / Peter L. Reichertz Institut für Medizinische Informatik, TU Braunschweig and Medizinische Hochschule Hannover, whose paper dwelt on automated methods for detecting organ dysfunctions.

In the ’Master’s degree’ category second place went to Lisa-Marie Kraus from Technische Universität München. Her paper examined the possibilities for producing 3D-printed implants to reduce the risk of heart attacks. Dr. Maximilian Fünfgeld from the Mannheim Medical Faculty of Universität Heidelberg took third place in this category. His subject was data protection-compliant federal archiving of medical research data.

In the ’Bachelor’s degree’ category second place went to Maximilian Brosius from Universität Hamburg for his paper on VR applications as a method of treating neurological diseases. Third place went to Joshua Drewlow and Michael Däppen from Berner Fachhochschule, who had examined AR-assisted navigation in hospitals.

The audience cast their vote – the winners

In addition to the jury’s selection, this was the second time that the Digital Audience Award was presented to the audience’s favourites. More than 500 users responded and cast their vote. In the ‘Master’s degree’ category it was Lisa-Marie Kraus who impressed the audience, and in the ’Bachelor’s degree’ category Daniel Reichenpfader from FH JOANNEUM University of Applied Sciences collected the most votes. In his paper under the heading ’Sleep Treatment on Cloud Nine’, he had developed the concept of a cloud-based platform for diagnosing and treating non-organic insomnia.
