Hospital Future Act, AI, consumer health – numerous aspects of digital health at DMEA 2023

The congress programme at DMEA 2023 has been announced: over the three days of the event more than 200 speakers from all over the world will present their visions of digitalisation in the healthcare system. Among those taking part will be Federal Health Minister Prof. Dr. Karl Lauterbach, Dr. Susanne Ozegowski and Dr. med. Markus Leyck Dieken.

From 25 to 27 April 2023 on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds the focus will be on the digital transformation of the healthcare system. On the stages at DMEA and at the Hub and Box, topics will get to the core of digital health, ranging from the electronic patient file, telemedicine and interoperability to the digitalisation strategy for the healthcare system and nursing sector. On 25 April, Federal Minister of Health Prof. Dr. Karl Lauterbach will open DMEA and hold a keynote speech. Afterwards, Matthias Mieves (German Bundestag and member of the Health and Digitalisation Committee) and Thomas Ballast (Techniker Krankenkasse) will talk about whether, at the halfway stage of its term, the federal government can succeed in transforming the healthcare system. At a session with Juulia Ukkonen-Wallmeroth (DigiFinland Oy), Mirjam Golis (Unity) and medical professional Nicolas Kahl, the topic will be how to make the digital transformation of healthcare work. The new bvitg debating club will also take place on day one of the fair. The topic here will be the impact of data protection on the digital transformation of the healthcare system. Trade visitors can look forward to a lively exchange between Prof. Ulrich Kelber (Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Information Security) and Dr. med. Markus Leyck Dieken (managing director of gematik).

Day two will kick off with the DMEA Run in the Tiergarten park. As in previous years, exhibitors and trade visitors with sporting ambitions will gather for a run together in the park. Those with enough energy afterwards can exchange views on the digital transformation of the healthcare system. Topics will focus on the nursing sector, with various congress events taking place on digitalisation in nursing. Dr. Christoph D. Spinner (Technische Universität München), Dr. Amanda Herbrand (Universitätsspital Basel) and Daniela Aufermann (Vestische Caritas Kliniken) will talk about the digitalisation strategy for the healthcare system and nursing sector. Dr. Martin Schölkopf (Federal Ministry of Health), Irene Maier (German Nursing Council) and Lars Gottwald (gematik) will also be addressing what is really required for a digitalisation strategy for the nursing sector. On day two of the event Dr. Susanne Ozegowski (head of Digitalisation & Innovation at the Federal Ministry of Health) will answer questions in the eHealth Hot Seat. The focus here will be on providing quick answers to the pressing issues of digitalisation in the healthcare system.

A trade fair for geriatric care (Altenpflege) is taking place in Nürnberg on the same dates as DMEA in Berlin. Visitors to the Nürnberg event can obtain a free ticket to day two of DMEA. All they have to do is scan or photograph the congress ticket for Altenpflege and email it to dmea@bvitg.de. Day two in Berlin traditionally concludes with the presentation of the DMEA Newcomer Award. Bachelor and Masters degree graduates in Digital Health have been invited to submit their final papers and the winners will receive prize money totalling 7,000 euros.

The final day of DMEA 2023 will begin with a round of yoga to relax tense muscles. Having found some inner calm visitors can then look forward to the day’s sessions, where topics will include implementation of the Hospital Future Act. Taking part in the discussion will be Markus Holzbrecher-Morys (German Hospital Federation), Lars Forchheim (German Association of Hospital IT managers), Carola Hollnack (Ministry of Science and Health of Rhineland-Palatinate) and Martin Schumm (lawyer). Also on day three of the event, Prof. Dr. Sylvia Thun (Charité Berlin) and digital health futurist Inga Bergen will talk about Women in Digital Health. They are members of the SHEHEALTH Network and focus on the special needs of women in digital health with a special view to the patient journey, clinical studies and digital health applications.

Taking place on all three days of the event on the new DMEA sparks stage will be discussions on a variety of digital health career topics – on Tuesday for example a session will take place with Prof. Dr. Bernhard Breil on Careers in Healthcare IT. In 2021 there were more than 100,000 vacancies in the IT sector. Breil will examine the needs of potential applicants and how companies can respond accordingly. On day three on the sparks stage the focus will be on Green IT in the German hospital landscape. Various experts will explain how climate change will in future impact the German health sector and the measures that can be taken to confront this.

The traditional tours of DMEA, the popular Start Me Up! sessions for startups and the Solutions Hubs for exhibitors will also be taking place on all three days of DMEA again. Full details of the programme can be found on the DMEA website and the DMEA platform which are updated at regular intervals.

Tickets to DMEA are available only from the online ticket shop.
