‘AI is changing medical practices for the better’

The Eltville-based IT provider medatixx keeps daily work in medical practices and care centres running smoothly using AI. Managing Director Jens Naumann talks about outpatient IT solutions in Germany

Interview with medatixx Managing Director Jens Naumann.

Practice management systems (PMS) are the backbone of outpatient medicine. What does practice IT need to do to keep users happy?

Firstly, there must be a powerful infrastructure on which the practice software runs. Our customers are free to decide whether to install their practice software on-site or run it in the cloud. Many others do not offer this flexibility. Secondly, the practice software itself must fully implement regulatory requirements. No compromises can be made here – whether in terms of e-prescriptions, e-sick leave notice (eAU), connection to electronic patient records (ePA) or billing. At medatixx, we have decades of experience in the optimal implementation of regulatory requirements, and that pays off. And thirdly, there must be scope for innovative solutions that complement your own practice software according to your individual wishes. This is where we score with our new medatixx-HealthHub, which will also be a focus for us at DMEA 2026.

What are these innovative additions? And how does the medatixx-HealthHub work?

We are talking about a wide range of tools – from appointment scheduling and medical history support to symptom checkers and video consultations. We have many of these applications in our basic portfolio ourselves. At the same time, we also want to give others the opportunity to offer corresponding solutions via the medatixx-HealthHub. This gives our customers access to innovative tools – something that many medical practices now rightly expect. At the same time, it allows us to ensure that the innovative tools are well integrated into our practice programmes by setting appropriate specifications. This also allows us to set standards for data security and processes such as user authentication. This is attractive: we are seeing a great deal of interest in the industry. We now have 18 partners, and the number is growing. Important: the medatixx-HealthHub is non-discriminatory. We do not say that one is better than the other. Our customers can and should judge that for themselves.

A more complex world of practice software places increasing demands on service. How is medatixx responding to this?

At DMEA 2026, we will be showcasing medatixx-Copilot, an AI-powered assistant that has already processed well over 50,000 enquiries since summer 2025. The medatixx-Copilot draws on our manuals and FAQ documents and answers everyday user questions about various practice software functions, from e-prescriptions to medical records. It is not based on normal large language models, but on product-specific LLMs that can also handle our highly graphic manuals. One of the main advantages is that questions can be answered around the clock, even on weekends. Of course, we still have personal contact persons. Because many simple questions can be answered via the medatixx-Copilot, personal support has more time available for more complex questions.

Is artificial intelligence finding its way into healthcare beyond support?

Absolutely. AI is changing medical practices for the better, which is another reason to visit our stand. We are currently working on making the practice's own patient data available for chat functions. This means that doctors will be able to query their own database directly with AI tools, for example when looking for similar patients. This will also enable content-related or statistical evaluations of the practice's own data. One AI solution that we will already have ready for use in Berlin is x.scribe. Here, we are cooperating with the company Corti on AI-supported real-time documentation. x.scribe enables practices to transcribe doctor-patient conversations digitally in real time. Based on this, suggestions for documentation are then generated, which can be transferred to the practice software with a simple click of the mouse after review. For the next stage of x.scribe's development, the plan is to prepare certain actions in the practice software based on the documentation – an e-prescription or an e-sick leave notice, for example. By the way: we make x.scribe and the medatixx-HealthHub available both to practices that use our medatixx or x.isynet practice programmes and to medical care centres (MVZ) that work with our x.vianova software solution. So, it's also worth MVZ and hospital customers visiting our DMEA stand.

medatixx is a medium-sized company that focuses entirely on the German market. Does that have a future?

More than ever. If you want to optimally implement the complex regulatory requirements in Germany, you have to know the market. We do that better than many others. Regardless of that, the importance of digital sovereignty is currently being made clear to all of us. We have always been committed to this. As a German medium-sized company, we not only create jobs in Germany, we also use the local infrastructure and host cloud applications in the country. What's more, our company is family-owned and not in the hands of international investors. In short, we live and breathe ‘made in Germany’ – now and in the future.
