DMEA 2021 Operation ’modernising the healthcare system’

The digital transformation of the healthcare system is taking place everywhere, in hospitals, medical practices, pharmacies, care homes and in facilities for treatment and ancillary products. The coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated how important it is to thoroughly and above all rapidly undertake a digital transformation of care processes. The pandemic also triggered the Hospital Future Act (KHZG), the biggest digital development programme ever in the German healthcare system. Thus, it is no surprise that KHZG funding is a major topic at DMEA 2021. It is also a focus of the ten Gold Partners taking part in this year’s event. However, aside from the KHZG, the DMEA’s Gold Partners also have some fascinating and innovative solutions in store.

CompuGroup Medical: “Patient involvement is a major topic“

For CompuGroup Medical (CGM), patient involvement is a major topic. The focus of the Koblenz-based company is also on providing access to the telematics infrastructure (TI) and its applications in the outpatient sector. “For customers of CGM the KHZG has come at the right time. Three years ago, we launched CGM CLINICAL, a new generation of our Hospital Information System (HIS), and are now in an ideal position to manage the digitalisation initiatives supported by KHZG funding”, says Thomas Simon, senior vice president, Clinical De-CH at CGM. The core product for involving the patient is CGM CLICKDOC product suite, whose solutions include a calendar function, video consultations as well as registration and discharge management. Regarding the telematics infrastructure, CGM is also showing how TI applications can be used to improve medication management.

ID GmbH & Co. KGaA: Coding in hospitals. Context is key

Medical software solutions are aimed at helping users in their day-to-day work, and that is precisely ID’s field. At DMEA 2021, one of its key topics will be digitally coded diagnoses and medical services, an area where IT support greatly assists users. “Clinical Context Coding means that we extract information from medical texts and documents and reproduce it in code“, says Joachim Meyer zu Wendischhoff, head of Medicine and Product Management at ID. The Berlin-based firm is particularly proud of its function for automatically identifying new examination and treatment methods (NUBs). It also works with NUBs where a code has yet to be assigned. The software flags it to ensure a service does not go missing on an invoice, says Meyer zu Wendischhoff.

m.Doc: Patient portals: “We can reap the full benefits“

For hospitals, patient portals are currently a very important topic, and corresponding solutions will feature prominently at DMEA 2021. m.Doc specialises in patient-focused platforms for emergency hospitals and rehab clinics. For Admir Kulin, founder and managing director of m.Doc, transparency is the main success factor: “Isolated standalone systems are no longer relevant. Our platform is completely open. We are cooperating with numerous HIS providers, including large ones, and have numerous interfaces that can be put to immediate use.” It is important to note that interoperability does not only mean HIS set-ups. Specifically in rehab clinics, many other systems have to link up to a portal, treatment planning tools for example: “We adapt to the situation and ultimately can connect almost anything“, says Kulin.

medatixx: Telematics services for physicians: Embedding solutions instead of just implementing them

For medical practices, care centres and outpatient units, access to the telematics infrastructure is currently a major topic. At DMEA it is also being highlighted by medatixx, which specialises in IT solutions for outpatient care. The keywords here are the electronic sick note (eAU), electronic patient file (ePA) and communications in the healthcare system (KIM). Outstanding ergonomics are decisive for a user’s acceptance of the system, says Jens Naumann, managing director of medatixx. Using KIM simply for emailing makes it cumbersome for practices, requiring them to sign in to separate email clients, shuffle medical reports and maintain separate address lists. Our goal goes beyond that: for the user the ergonomics must remain the same. That only works if KIM – including future ePrescriptions – is fully embedded in the medical practice software.

Meierhofer AG: KHZG and TI: A long overdue boost for digitalisation

Matthias Meierhofer, board chairman and founder of Meierhofer AG, welcomes the modernisation process triggered by the KHZG and currently taking place in the hospital IT market with open arms. The focus of this HIS supplier is on patient portals, patient care / treatment documentation and medication management, and on introducing PDMS systems in intensive care units. Accordingly, these solutions are also a major topic at DMEA 2021. “As far as changing processes is concerned we have compiled a list of best practices from the experiences gained from hospitals we have switched over in recent years, which are very helpful. Overall, our experience with virtual events has been very positive, which is why we are looking forward to this year’s DMEA.”

NEXUS AG: A quick and intelligent path to a reliable diagnosis

For Daniel Heine, managing director of NEXUS AG, the NEXUS / KISNG hospital information system (HIS) is the main platform for integrating a hospital’s entire range of specialist applications. “It is all based on a central data hub, a vendor-neutral archive (VNA), that will also be a key topic for us at DMEA. Using our NEXUS / Deep View® VNA we can achieve genuine interoperability, while adhering strictly to international standards.” For NEXUS, another key topic at DMEA 2021 is the use of AI in diagnostics. “Among other things, we are looking at making use of digital data from medical devices which we enhance with algorithms and automatically integrate into corresponding texts. That will be a major win for users and make the benefits of digitalisation in medicine very clear.”

Philips GmbH: Digital solutions benefit patients in all areas of medical care

From registration to post-discharge – digital solutions can make medical care safer, easier and more efficient in many areas, says Gerrit Schick, head of Health Informatics DACH at Philips GmbH. At DMEA 2021 the company will show how digital solutions can offer a benefit during the various treatment stages of a patient journey. According to Schick, “Philips Engage is an important element here. On the one hand this solution features a patient portal, but it is also more than that. It is a patient-focused communications platform, which not only transfers data back and forth, but which we can also use to provide comprehensive care. We are also making this technology available for long-term telemedicine support for chronically ill patients.“

Smartify: Digital process control – in real time

At DMEA, Smartify is highlighting its Smartify Stream Data Platform (Smartify SDP), an interoperable data platform: “Data are stored locally and access is provided in real time to harmonised, historicísed and normalised data for internal analyses and cross-sectoral communications“, says Dr. Tobias Möhlmann, CEO and managing director of Smartify. The system is based on Change Data Capture (CDC) technology, which loads new data whenever a data item changes – regardless of when that happens. That is a requirement for data-driven process control, whose uses include up-to-the-minute scheduling, in operating theatres for example. Others include controlling occupancy, duty rosters, not to mention alert systems in hospitals.

Telekom Healthcare Solutions: Releasing the digital handbrake in the healthcare system

For Telekom Healthcare Solutions, the future belongs to cross-sectoral treatment scenarios that integrate workflows, medical devices and patient devices of every kind. In that respect other countries are leading the way. “With iMedOne NG, our latest-generation HIS, we have installed a large system in South Africa that transfers data from all hospital activities directly to the HIS. We still have a long way to go before we reach that stage in Germany“, says Michael Waldbrenner, managing director of Deutsche Telekom Clinical Solutions GmbH. At DMEA 2021, Telekom’s main topics will be patient portals and connecting cooperating inpatient and outpatient facilities. “We can supplement these solutions with infrastructure and security services and can also address KHZG-related topics such as hosting and cloud computing, and as such are able to offer comprehensive services“, says Waldbrenner.

VISUS: Healthcare content management: The big brother of HIS

How can one maximise the digital funding made available by the KHZG? For Dr. Daniel Geue, head of Product Management at VISUS Health IT GmbH, merely introducing an app or updating the Hospital information system (HIS) is not enough. “Rather, data must be stored in a way that permits rapid access, transmission and evaluation, without any major effort. Following the example of enterprise content management (ECM), VISUS coined the term healthcare content management (HCM), which will be its key topic at DMEA. “An HCM system is not an add-on to the HIS, but in effect its big brother. In JiveX HCM, we have a modular product that offers customers optimum support in every relevant area – from data input, data administration and archiving through to representation, communication and evaluation.”
